Our History
A Brief History of Boyd Hill Baptist Church — “And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16: 18
Boyd Hill Baptist Church and its surrounding community is one that is seeded in deep history, beginning with its name. The community of Boyd Hill was named in honor of Deacon William Boyd who built the first house within the community in the early 1900s. When the Church was established, it was also named Boyd Hill to commemorate this founding father.
As documented by the state of South Carolina, the church was officially established in 1908, as the result of prayer band meetings and Sunday school classes held on Front Street, which is now known as Bynum Avenue. The sessions had humble beginnings and were conducted from a makeshift tent purchased by the small group of neighbors.
Construction of a permanent structure began in 1912. However, there was a major setback due to the demolishment of that same building in the early 1930s. Despite the structural damage, the body of the church continued to grow and prosper and a second church was built, using the pillars and floors of the existing structure on the corner of Hoyle and Glenn Streets.
This church provided many amenities to its congregation, but the building began to deteriorate, and in 1977, a third church was built directly below it, which would accommodate approximately 250 guests comfortably. Just like churches in Judea, Galilee and Samaria, our church was “…edified by walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Ghost, were multiplied.” Acts 9:31 As a result, the congregation was broken into two services from 1977 to1995, when a new church was built, which is the current sanctuary.
Throughout its one hundred years, Boyd Hill has had many leaders who were preachers, ministers, and pastors who included:
1. Rev. Elliott Hall
2. Rev. Ross
3. Rev. J. Lewis Jennings
4. Rev. John J. Woodard (1921-1926)
5. Rev. Robert F. Lee (1926-1927)
6. Rev. J.S. Reid (1927-1929)
7. Rev. W.C. Meeks (1930-1947)
8. Rev. A.T. McDaniel (supply pastor)
9. Rev. S.G. Walker (1947-1955)
10. Rev. J.A. Massey (1955-1957)
11. Rev. J.A. McClurklin
12. Rev. Harvey Boyd
13. Rev. C.N. Evans
14. Rev. M.C. Moore (1968-1983)
15. Rev. Archie Stover (1983-1986)
16. Rev. B.R. Wilson (1986-1998)
17. Rev. J.T. Barber (1999-Present)
It is in the name of Jesus that we reflect upon the rich history of this church with thanksgiving. We have been abundantly blessed to grow and grow. The buildings that were erected over the years are only symbolic dwelling places to publicly commune with God and his people, but the church should live within our hearts. We will continue to uplift the name of Jesus in all that we do for he is worthy.
